We started Twelfth Night today. This was Shakespeare’s last romantic comedy, but it’s considered to be one of his best. It touches on what seems to be modern-day issues, but are actually issues that have been around for quite some time (cross-dressing, gender stereotypes). It’s connected to the other plays we’ve read that have played on the exact same things (Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew). Many of Shakespeare’s plays tend to bring up these issues and, in a way, make them seem incredibly modern.
I’m excited to read this play. I saw it performed live at a women’s college (Meredith College) with an all-female cast. It made some of the plot even more confusing. There was a woman playing a man who was pretending to be a woman dressing as a boy. I think that made it even more hilarious, though.
