We’re now reading The Merchant of Venice. Personally, it’s so, so shocking to read how Shylock [the Jewish character in the play] is treated. He’s spat upon, called a dog, and mistreated in so many other ways. It’s hard to see him as the villain when he gets treated so poorly.
I found it strange that the Jewish people back then were forced into ghettos and had to wear red hats signifying their race — much like the Jews had to do in WWII. I had no idea this was the case until we started reading this.
