This is William Shakespeare. He’s possibly one of the most well-known writers of all time. I took a class on Shakespeare in high school and loooved it. It was amazing. We acted out everything and our teacher explained a lot of it to us. It was perfect. I’m a bit wary of reading Shakespeare by myself because of this, but I think reading a lot of it out loud will help.
Looking at gendered bodies, sexuality, and race in Shakespeare’s writing seems fascinating to me. Being a women’s studies minor AND a Shakespeare ethusiast, I think I’m really going to get a lot out of this class.
The topic that really stood out for me was Female Sexuality as Interpreted in the Early Modern Period. It seems as though that, back then, women either had too much sexuality or none at all. Women were either “good” and chaste or “bad” and whore-like. In some ways, that still seems to be the case. I’d like to further investigate this topic and compare it to present-day society.
